It is considered more as a leisure activity than a sport. It requires special suiting and equipment to aid in swimming underwater.
Puerto Rico consists of various smaller islands, and all of them have their separate resort areas. Some of these resort areas include areas set out for scuba diving and snorkeling.
The most popular region in Puerto Rico is San Juan. Over here the San Juan bay marina and Isla Verde are good places where equipment is easily available for renting. San Juan is an over populated area and is therefore not the most ideal place for snorkeling. Also the north shore fronts the Atlantic Ocean and its water is quite chaotic and unsafe. Some of the protected areas such as the Rincon and Aguadilla are best for surfing in winters and snorkeling in summers.
However two islands have been ranked the best and ideal place for snorkeling in Puerto Rico. These are the Vieques and Culebra islands.
It is better to take a trip to Fajardo if you want to get the best real experience of Caribbean snorkeling. The water in this area is serene with a beautiful image and tropical fish.
